One Trip, One Road Touring

I call it "One Trip, One Road" touring.

Sometimes, I'm bored with driving and need some 'wake me up' action. So I decide to follow some road, any road, and see where it goes. No planning, no risk-analysis, and no fear of the consequences.

It's a type of travel I have yearned to do for an entire vacation, but never have the guts or time for.

For instance, back in America, I always wanted to take the Lincoln Highway (US 30) from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific. It's the first transcontinental highway across the United States, finished in 1913, and happens to pass through my childhood town of Valparaiso, Indiana.

Fancy that.

US 50 - the Loneliest Highway.

In fact, I did drive part of one road US 50, "the Loneliest Highway," from Wyoming to California. It was easy, because it was the only road through the area without taking a four-wheel-drive truck off road.

Follow that road and find out where it leads.

It took me back to when I was in Croatia in Europe, traveling on a tiny access road that circles a peninsula somewhere on the Mediterranean coast.

It captured my imagination and took me on an adventure with rocks, cliffs and crooked trees. Nearby, the dark marine sea foamed with white tops as hundreds of shades of blue that ripple up to the sky above.

The road becomes more impassible, more impossible, as walkways spill from courtyards and castle fortifications cascade from cliffs above.

I finally reach a set of stairs that effectively blocks the road.

Here, I finally met my Waterloo. I can go no further. There was no doubt in my mind I would finally run into a strategically placed potted plant or a crooked wall, like this.

I sheepishly, and carefully, turned my wayward car around. I drive back, savoring my ignorance and my being an American in a foreign land. No harm done. An adventure is an adventure, no matter how small the roadway.

A child simply abandoned a scooter in the middle of the road

On the return, I met a strategically placed child's scooter. It was not here a minute ago. Hmm? Is somebody trying to send me a message, or has a child simply abandoned it in the middle of the road and raced off to do something more exciting like lunch?

Don't know. Don't care. I'm on vacation, and it's my adventure after all. I carefully drive around the scooter and don't give it another thought...

Life is too short to worry about such things.

Get on that road, the One Road and follow it to see where it goes...
